Should Minimum Wage Be Raised - 870 Words
Should Minimum Wage Be Raised? Minimum wage has always been a controversial issue. Many politicians use the argument of minimum wage for their own political propaganda. Some may argue minimum wage should be raised, while others believe it will have detrimental effects on our economy if it is raised. Surprising to most people, minimum wage earners make up only a small percent of American workers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, minimum wage workers make up about 2.8% of all workers in America. ââ¬Å"The majority of minimum wage workers are between the ages of 16 and 24. These are high school and college studentsâ⬠(Sherk 2). But high school and college students are not the entire percentage of minimum wage earners. When minimumâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Next, another problem the rise of minimum wage poses is the rise of inflation. If employers are required to pay their employees more, then they need to do something to compensate for the extra money they are losi ng. With this in mind, employers would have to increase the prices of goods. But sometimes raising prices is not an option for employers. ââ¬Å"If a business cannot simply pass along its new labor costs, it must somehow absorb themââ¬âby eliminating workers rendered unproductive by the new minimum wage, by replacing labor with more-productive machines, or by cutting productionâ⬠(Intorduction 2). This brings back the issue of minimum wage causing a dramatic increase in unemployment. Sherk believes it is the wrong time to increase minimum wage, due to the fact that America is currently in a recession. The right time to think about raising minimum wage would be when the unemployment rate drops drastically. Sherk states ââ¬Å"In 2007, Congress voted to increase the minimum wage, raising it in three $0.70 increments from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour. The final installment represents a 10 percent increase in the cost of hiring minimum wage employeesâ⬠(Sherk 1). Seemly inflatio n and minimum wage increases influence each other. One of astrologyââ¬â¢s first graces on human minds was with the Babylonians and Ancient Egyptians, and then spread throughout the Arab world. Since, there has been explorations of astrology through manuscripts and celestial objects made by Arab craftsmen. Many islamic ornamental motifs and architecture references astrological findings. We will write a custom essay sample on Explorations of Astrology or any similar topic only for you Order Now The Islamic calendar says that the day begins at sunset and the five prayers start from that time. Adjusting times for prayer grew out of observing the heavens, a practice known since the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians. The Arabs, for centuries, studied the sky and examined the groups of stars and phases of the moon on their long desert travels. This education of space was adapted and developed to conform to the practice of Islam. During the medieval period of the Islamic world, the science of astrology as a branch from astronomy was translated by the Greeks into Arabic, along with Sasanian, Indian and ancient Egyptian influences, allowing more scientific and mathematical development by mathematicians and scientists of the Arab world. The subject came to be a very popular one, as it was taken interest in by scholars such as Abu Maââ¬â¢shar al-Balkhi, al-Biruni, and Nasir al-Din al-Tusi. There is evidence of this topic being widespread throughout the Islamic world, such as manuscripts and astrological records found in al-Fustat in Egypt. Since there has proven to be much scientific evidence and involvement in the study of the stars and planets, how did this outbreak of information in the Islamic world affect Islamic Art? And why was it so significant? There is much architecture, objects and textiles from the Islamic World that express the significance of this topic, such as Qusayr ââ¬ËAmra (figure 1) in Jordan, built by Umayyad caliph Walid II in the early 8th century, which features a frescoed caldarium ceiling depicting the twelve Zodiac constellations. The exterior of the construction is very minimal; the only ornamentation being small domes and triple arches. Otherwise, the ornamentation becomes servant to the architecture. The techniques that were contributed into constructing Qusayr ââ¬ËAmra references the Roman and Byzantine techniques: predominately limestone and terracotta brick, along with other types of stones. The frescoed ceilings in the caldarium, or the hot plunge bath, is said to be the earliest depiction of the stars painted on a domed surface. It features 35 recognizable constellations along with, as mentioned previously, twelve zodiacs. There has been reported to be one mistake: the order of the stars in the counterclockwise direction, which tells that it is possible that the fresco was copied from a flat surface. This fresco, however, is not the only one in Qusayr ââ¬ËAmra: there were many brilliant murals in several of the other chambers that suggest that the caliphs of this ââ¬Å"pleasure palaceâ⬠lived a luxurious lifestyle. This luxury tells of an involvement in The use of imagery in relation to astrology began in the twelfth century, and eventually taken in for its visual decorative quality, by the Ghaznavids and the Seljuqs among others, and they adopted it with their own meanings and influences. The gilded and over glazed bowl (figure 2) depicts figures very close to those of the Kashan. There is Kufic inscriptions around the rim of the bowl, and the focal point is the sun-shaped face in the center, with a classical depiction of the six planets surrounding it. There are images of figures sitting on thrones, riding on horseback, and playing instruments composed in a radial composition, following the form of the object. The only two seated figures on thrones sit across from each other on the band, with the other figures surrounding it. This motif combines two different motifs that are common in Islamic art together: the image of figures performing activities or in a scene depicted centrally to the object, as can be seen in the Stain- and overglaze-painted bowl (Ettinghausen, Grabar, Jenkins-Madina, 175), for example, and images of a single figure repeated to create a visual pattern, as demonstrated in the outer rim of Glazed and lustre-painted composite-bodied bowl (Ettinghausen, Grabar, Jenkins-Madina, 174). This royal bowl is very similar to the Stain- and overglaze-painted beaker (Ettinghausen, Grabar, Jenkins-Madina, 176) in the way that it has different tiers showing different figures in action repeated across the band of the beaker. The copper-alloy mirror (figure 3) is another royal artifact that utilizes the zodiacs as symbols of power made for Artuqid ruler Artuq Shah. My Mom Essay Example
My Mom Essay It has taken me all of my 17 years of life to finally realize what an import person my mother has been to me, and how much of an influence she has had on my life. I have never noticed until I started to contemplate my essay topic. She is an extraordinary influence on my life, and also my best friend. My mom is such a great role model I feel lucky to have been raised and brought up by her. I aspire to grow into as great a person as she is today. My mom has sacrificed so much for my brother and I, she would drop everything and anything if it meant helping us in someway or just to make our day a little better. My moms love for my brother and I is most apparent in the way she wants us to experience our life. She wants to give us every opportunity she possibly can and especially the ones she never got; if that meant whether or not we wanted to or not. She always encourages us to do and try new things, stick with something all the way through and never quit. She pushed me to accomplish things I never would have done without her support and guidance. Although she gave it all her might sometimes my stubbornness outshone her persistence. Iââ¬â¢ve been involved in so many different activities since I was able to walk I start to lose count. In most of my activities my mom was determined to make me stick with it and do my best, but eventually in every time, without fail, I wanted to quit. Piano, soccer, basketball, violin, dance, gymnastics, choir, every time I was convinced to ââ¬Å"give it a try! â⬠, and every time I quit for vast and vague reasons. This became a pattern up until the eighth grade. This is only a small example of how much my mother has been an important influence on my life, but made a big impact. They were worth it and I love dance so much. I have improved so much since freshman year and look forward to possibly dancing in college. Now my brother is a freshman and he is faced with the same problem I had when I was his age, and now its up to my mom and I to help him fit in and find his way in high school!

How To Write More When You Dont Have Time
How To Write More When You Dont Have Time In our Better Blogger Survey, we found out two things about (most) of you: 86% of you plan to publish more content than you have been. 75% of you are onà a team of only two people or are blogging solo. Nathan suggested that I talk a bit more about this topic, partially because of the fact that I work as a solo blogger and write about 6,000 to 10,000 words each week, and also because you and I have similar goals (yep, I took that same survey and can vouch for these two concern points). Usually, Iââ¬â¢ll push the idea that if you canââ¬â¢t handle more, you canââ¬â¢t do more. But for the go-getters out there who are insisting that you are going to write moreà no matter what, hereââ¬â¢s the ugly truth: Self-discipline and work lie ahead, not gimmicks or hacks. How To #Write More With Your Small Team via @JulieNeidlinger And, to get things off to a great start, letââ¬â¢s talk about distractions. Control The Distractions To Write More Iââ¬â¢ve talked about distraction-free writingà in terms of the writing space itself, and how the visual distractions of the app you write in might hamper your writing efforts. Nothing derails my ability to write more, though, than the fact that I can check Facebook, my phone, Twitter, and every other non-work ââ¬Å"informationâ⬠source under the sun to avoid the work of writing. I blame my browserââ¬â¢s URL recognition and the fact that I can start typing ââ¬Å"facebookâ⬠with just my left hand for sending me over there so much. Itââ¬â¢s as if my hand starts typing ââ¬Å"faceâ⬠on its own at this point. Recommended Reading:à How To Improve Your Personal Productivity As You Blog These technology and computer-based distractions are a struggle to deal with, but there are some technological based solutions youà can use (e.g. Chrome plugins that limit time on social media, or a browser that locks you out of websites youââ¬â¢ve deemed distracting during work hours). But there are other distractions that have nothing to do with technology. I write at home, and since weââ¬â¢ve been having wonderful warm fall weather lately, I like to open up the windows for fresh air. The distraction? A neighbor who leaves the dog out all day while he is at work, leaving the neighborhood with incessant barking and howling the entire day. If youââ¬â¢re like me, once you hear a noise and really notice it, itââ¬â¢s all you hear. That white noise machine works great for putting you to sleep at night, for example, until one night you hear the loop and from that point on, all you can hear is the loop. So with Mr. McBarky in the neighborhood, I find I have to write elsewhere (basement, coffee shops, library) or keep the windows closed. If not, I inevitably end up enraged on a ridiculous level, calling animal control to report the dog. Control your #distractions to #write more content, grow your blog, and increase your impact. So what to do about the distractions that keep you from writingà more content and hitting your blog schedule goals? 1. Identify your distractions. Distractions can be digital, they can be audible, they can be hunger, they can be coworkers, they can be disinterest, they can be emotional- anything that sends your thought off track. Before you can defeat them, you have to be able to identify them. What am I doing when I realize Iââ¬â¢m not writing? If you sat down to write and suddenly realize you arenââ¬â¢t, diagnose what happened. Write down what distracted you, and where you ended up. Write down what time of day it was, and the setting (where you were) when it took place. Note why you think you were distracted. 2. Find the distraction pattern. Distraction patterns often follow typical paths. We can focus better in the morningà (especially as you get older), while we almost look for distraction later in the afternoon. We can focus better if we havenââ¬â¢t been sitting still in the same place too long. We get sleepy after a big meal. Look at those moments of distraction that keep popping up. Can you see a pattern? Was it because you were bored, tired, or had just eaten lunch? Try to figure out when and why you are the most distracted, and see if you can plan your writingà to happen when you are least distracted. This is tricky in a team; the plans and meetings of others are inevitably going to force you into distraction zones. This is a valid topic of discussion with your team regarding the scheduling of meetings and other distractions versus the goal of writingà more content. Find your distraction paths to change your perspective productively. #writingYou may find one key reason for ââ¬Å"distractionâ⬠is procrastination. Procrastination is its own beast, that horrible trap when you put off doing something you donââ¬â¢t want to do as long as you can. Itââ¬â¢s certainly not a part of writing more content, though I could very well be a card-carrying member of Procrastinatorââ¬â¢s Anonymous. Iââ¬â¢ve mentioned before how you can work with your procrastinating tendencies and still produce, and I stand by the idea that you can work with it as well as overcome it to some extent. Procrastination is often at the heart of most distractions; we go looking for something else to do. We actively wantà to be distracted. Itââ¬â¢s the toughest one to deal with, and takes the most willpower. 3. Build on useful distractions. When I am trying to read something difficult that I know is good for me, I find my mind wandering. I will miraculously remember a million valid things I need to remember doing, things I donââ¬â¢t seem to recall unless Iââ¬â¢m otherwise trying to harness my attention to something difficult. Keep a piece of paper handy and write down those to-dos, those ââ¬Å"oh yeahâ⬠moments so that you can get it out of your mind and can get on with the main thing at hand. Otherwise, they just sit there and fester and make it impossible for you to get your writing done. How To Turn Negative Distractions Into Something Useful #bloggingAnd heck, youââ¬â¢ll probably end up with a fine task list when youââ¬â¢re done. Might as well capitalize on the inevitable distraction and turn them from something negative into something useful. 4. Kill useless distractions. Hereââ¬â¢s where the meat of the whole ââ¬Å"control your distractionsâ⬠approach takes effect, and it wonââ¬â¢t be fun or pretty. Itââ¬â¢s going to hurt. I mean, if we are people who are checking ourà mobile phones nearly once every six waking minutes of the day, we are clearly addicted to distractions. We give lip service to our disgust with experiencing distractions while we secretly crave any chance to be interrupted from work. So... Mobile phone.à Turn off your phone completely so there are no dings and vibrations. Or, turn off all app notifications. Or go into a room away from your mobile phone. Offline. Write with pen and paper, or even a typewriter (for reals, not ironically), so that you arenââ¬â¢t tempted to venture down any Internet rabbit hole. If you need the Internet to do research, write the outlineà and basic post structure offline first. You can write in Google Docs offline, so turn off your Internet connection and use that feature. Get a door.à Find a quiet place that has a door and let your team members know (or your family, or your kids) that you cannot be interrupted until a set time. Get a clock placard and hang on the door with a note about interruptions if you have to. Limit messages. Forbid yourself from checking email more than three times a day. Two is even better. The same for social media that you use for messaging. Unless you are the social media manager or it's part of your plannedà social media engagement program, get off of it. This is why planning is important for all content creation, including social media. Without planning, you sort of find yourself on Twitter, all the time. Whoops. Dominate your stomach. Have water nearby, before you write, unless you plan to break at regular intervals to walk and get water. But donââ¬â¢t eat too much before you prepare to do your most arduous content creation. Eating makes you sleepy. A little hunger pang during your writing isnââ¬â¢t going to kill you; it might sharpen your senses a bit. While fatigue can improve some aspects of creativity (because it wears down barriers you erect in your mind), writing a coherent blog post while drowsy doesnââ¬â¢t work. If you get great ideas while youââ¬â¢re sleepy, fine. Do the writing of those ideas while youââ¬â¢re sharp and awake. Rethink your hunger. No more ââ¬Å"I think I need a snackâ⬠excuses. Most of the coffee consumed in offices is likely out of boredom. You just want to get up and away from your desk. Set a timer. Sometimes, I find it really helpful to inject a level of fake ââ¬Å"stressâ⬠by setting a timer and saying, for example, that I have 1 hour to get a post written. Granted, Iââ¬â¢ll have to clean it up and such, but it really turns the focus on when youââ¬â¢re racing against the clock. You produce. You can clean it up later. Move around.à Get up and away from your desk. Go for a walk before you sit down to do any major writing. If youââ¬â¢re one of the frozen chosen like we are up here in North Dakota and itââ¬â¢s too cold out, find a stairwell and go up and down a few flights to get the blood pumping. Procrastination problems. Admit youââ¬â¢re a procrastinator, and start working on the self-discipline to do the hard stuff first. That alone will decrease your distractions because youââ¬â¢ve removed the biggest contributor to the category of Distractions You Can Control. Tidy up.à Get junk and clutter off of your desk and workspace. No noises. No, you cannot do a good job writing with the TV going or music blaring. I know some people swear that they canââ¬â¢t write without music blaring through their earbuds, but I really doubt it. Perhaps there are some scenarios or rare situations, but generally, having the words of others wafting through the brain isnââ¬â¢t going to help you write a blog post. And sitting down in front of the TV in the evening with your laptop with the idea that youââ¬â¢ll write and watch Netflix at the same time? Liar. It will only take longer than if you did it without the background noise. If your team is serious about writing more contentà and also realizes that distractions are a serious issue, you will need to essentially create a ââ¬Å"clean roomâ⬠, a place where distractions cannot be found. No phones, no noises, a door- whatever youââ¬â¢ve determined is derailing your writingà efforts. Stop Being An Island John Donneà said that no man was an island, and the same can be said for your team. There are other people out there who can help you writeà more content through things like guest posts and interviews. Itââ¬â¢s just a guess, but when most content marketers (particularly solo marketers) start thinking about the overwhelming state of writing more content, they are thinking as islanders. They are thinking itââ¬â¢s all on them. They are thinking that each piece of content is brand new, from scratch, all on their lonesome. A couple of truths about writingà content that can help get you off the island: There are great guest writersà out there. Find them on the blogs you already enjoy reading. Find them in the comments section. Ask them if theyââ¬â¢d like to write for you. Please remember to reuse your content. Content curationà is a valid part of ââ¬Å"yourâ⬠content plan. Most ideas are derivative. You donââ¬â¢t always have to come up with new ideas every day. You can expound or rework your own, or otherââ¬â¢s, ideas. In other words, you can include other people's content in your efforts to ââ¬Å"writeâ⬠more content, even if you didnââ¬â¢t exactly create the content. The big trap for you comes when you view writingà as starting fresh and new each day. You think youââ¬â¢re running a race on your own when youââ¬â¢re actually running a relay and passing off the baton. Writing is like running a relay and passing the baton. You're not alone. #bloggingThe overlap between growth and quantity. Itââ¬â¢s not that you donââ¬â¢t already know those things in that list; weââ¬â¢ve talked about them a lot here on this blog. But I think itââ¬â¢s easy to think of them in terms of ââ¬Å"these are growth hacksâ⬠and forget that they are also a part theà ââ¬Å"writing more contentâ⬠set. More content often leads to more growth, but if you step back and see it not just as part of your plan to grow but also part of how youââ¬â¢ll simply go about increasing your content output, it might help you approach these ideas better. Growth tends to be numbers we measure after something has occurred. Writingà a larger quantity of content is something that has to simply happen right now. So, if you have a list of things to do to grow your brand, and you have a different list of things to do to writeà more content, and those lists donââ¬â¢t have these similarities, you need to rethink your approach. A Lack Of Resources Perhaps the stumbling block for writing more contentà is that you lack resources. These might include: Time Ability Knowledge Money Well, thatââ¬â¢s really all of it, isnââ¬â¢t it? Any kind of blogging resource falls into one of those biggies. I canââ¬â¢t conjure up more time for you, though I can talk to you about using it more wisely and defeating procrastination. I can also suggest a couple of things that might be consuming the limited amount of time and resources that you have. If you donââ¬â¢t have time to write long, long blog posts, donââ¬â¢t write them. Ideal blog post lengthà is really quite arguable. Different bloggers swear by different post lengths. Fresh and frequent content happens easier with shorter posts if you are short on time and blogging solo. You may love Blog Xââ¬â¢s layout and gadgetry, and the success theyââ¬â¢ve touted from using them, but if you donââ¬â¢t know how to create and/or maintain such things, why are you wasting so much time chasing it down for your own site? Just create good content and forget the bells and whistles for now. You may not know as much as the rest in your niche. So capitalize on that from two directions: Learn by reading the experts, and create content for your own audience based around what you found and learned from the experts. Eventually, youââ¬â¢ll gain the knowledge yourself. In the meantime, you writeà more content and you bring your audience along for the education ride. You may wish to be the Oracle Of Your Niche, but itââ¬â¢s probably not going to happen. If you donââ¬â¢t have the time to search down 10 white papers for research for one post, find one really good piece of information and set your plan to create three pieces of content from the one. When tallying up what resources you think you need as you create your content marketing plan, list resources you actually have instead of resources others have that you want. You can still make great stuff with fewer resources. Remember, necessity is the mother of invention. The key to writing more contentà from a small amount of input is to be creative with what you have, not what you think you should have.

The easy way to boost your brain power - Emphasis
The easy way to boost your brain power The easy way to boost your brain power Step away from the keyboard and pick up a pen. Thats the latest expert advice for anyone who wants to study and remember more effectively. We learn better when writing by hand than when we type, according to Anne Mangen, associate professor at the University of Stavanger in Norway, and neurophysiologist Jean-Luc Velay. Senses working overtime This is partly, according to Mangen, an effect of the senses. The physical act of forming letters with a writing implement sends more varied feedback to the brain from the feel of the pen and paper to the motor function of shaping the words letter by letter than pressing identical keys to produce fully formed letters in one go. Indeed, research led by Velay shows that writing by hand leaves a motor memory in a part of the brain that links to visual recognition: the sensorimotor system. In safe hands On this point, Mangen refers to an experiment in which two groups of adults were tasked with learning a foreign alphabet. One group learned the symbols using a keyboard, the other by writing them out. When they were tested at three and six weeks into the experiment on their ability to recollect the letters and to recognise when the characters had been reversed, those whod been writing by hand outperformed the keyboard-users every time. The nature of business in the modern office may have made us all secretly proud of our words-per-minute scores, but if we want to remember what were writing, this speed is not our friend. Call it obvious, but the simple fact that writing by hand takes that bit longer also influences the learning process. Hardened technophiles may scoff and instead try typing in slow motion as they attempt to learn Mandarin or memorise the periodic table, but they still wont be stimulating the right part of the brain. The sensorimotor component forms an integral part of training for beginners, says Mangen.

The goal of the Mr. Walton when he opened up the first retail store was to save people money to help them live a better life (Walmartstores, 2009).
